Literacy and Numeracy

Malbank School provides a wealth of activities and support mechanisms to help young people develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

In lessons students are aided by Literacy working walls, where specialist vocabulary related to subject topics is displayed. Advice on literacy and numeracy is given in feedback from staff.

Each department has a variety of literacy and numeracy skill development built into their schemes of work - for example in History, graphs are used to display the impact of disease in Victorian towns and poems are explored from the Great War.

Beyond the school curriculum, there is a wealth of support mechanisms to support the development of literacy and numeracy skills:

  • English Champions - will help pupils with homework.
  • Selected pupils are receiving 1-2-1 Literacy support from Year 11 Literacy Mentors every week
  • Selected pupils receive small group Literacy / Numeracy support.
  • A termly writing competition engages students of all ages and abilities
  • World Book Day provides a focal point for Literacy every year.
  • Literacy activities are run weekly in registration time.
  • Numeracy activities and Literacy help pages are in the planner.
  • Numeracy challenge on the screen in the canteen.
