A Level Languages

AS French, German and Spanish

For AS, students follow the AQA course. Key topics include:

  • Media
  • Popular culture
  • Healthy living
  • Family and personal relationships

Pupils are assessed in four skill areas, (listening, reading, speaking and writing) although there are only two exams:

  • The listening, reading and writing paper (2 hours)
  • The speaking exam (approx. 30 minutes)

All students in KS5 are allocated a fortnightly one to one slot with a native speaker to really help them to develop their speaking skills and gain confidence in this area.

At the end of Year 12, we encourage all students to take part in work experience in either France, Germany or Spain and we help them to arrange this. Students are also invited to take part in the school's European trips, such as the Paris trip or the German exchange.

A2 French, German and Spanish

For A2, students continue to follow the AQA course. Key topics include:

  • Environment
  • The multicultural society
  • Contemporary social issues

Students must also study two cultural topics. These might include:

  • An author
  • A region of the country
  • A director
  • A period of 20th century history
  • A dramatist or poet

The A2 course in languages offers students the opportunity to really develop their debating skills as well as their analytical skills in the essay work. The A2 course thoroughly prepares learners for continuing their studies at university.

Pupils are assessed in four skill areas, (listening, reading, speaking and writing) although there are only two exams:

  • The listening, reading and writing paper (2 and a half hours)
  • The speaking exam (approx. 30 minutes)
