Art
and Design
Art and Design AS and A2 level
is a creative course where students will be introduced
to a variety of materials and techniques. Units of work
will require you to work from observation, research
artists and designers styles of work, experiment with
ideas and processes toward a final piece. At AS and
A2 level there are two extended units of work followed
by a controlled test.

Biology
From the simple structure of a cell to the cutting
edge technology of genetic engineering, Biology holds
something of interest to all. You will develop the investigative
and analytical skills required by a modern scientist.
Biology is vital for students wishing to enter medicine,
veterinary science, forensic science, physiotherapy
and dentistry, but equally a good subject to enter into
any profession such as law and business management.

Business
Studies
Business Studies is based on building an understanding
of how businesses and their personnel operate and function.
This is a practical, relevant subject which combines
well with many other A levels. Students will find that
Business Studies will be of use in whatever career path
they choose to follow. Popular career paths are in the
following areas:- accountancy, banking and financial
services, law, sales, marketing, advertising and human
resources.

Electronics
This course is designed to develop
positive attitudes towards learning and applying electronic
principles. It will give students an awareness of the
importance of electronics in society and will them knowledge
and design capability in the key areas of "control"
and "communication". This qualification will
suit students who wish to follow a career in a wide
range of fields including engineering.

Language
This subject aims to encourage students to become aware
of how, where and why we use language. Students will
become descriptive linguists - examining and describing
instances of language, not prescribing "correct" forms of use.
The current course examines both speech and writing
in context. As well as this, students will explore the
great variety of UK dialects and analyse the relationships
between language and technology.

Literature
Covering a selection of poetry, prose and drama texts
from at least five hundred years of English Literature,
the course will provide students with a wide-ranging
understanding of writing in English and the social contexts
that have affected it. Excellent skills of analysis
and criticism and the ability to construct and present
a powerful argument will also be developed. Trips include
a visit to Shakespeare's Globe, a lecture workshop at
Chester University.

Chemistry is such a great subject to study for the

The study of economics involves looking at key issues
affecting the lives of all of us. These vary from the
effects of introducing road pricing in the UK to should
we cancel Third World debt. Issues that you frequently
see discussed in the media. The study of economics will
enable you to develop a logical, coherent way of examining
these issues enabling you to have an informed view of
many important topics.

and Politics
If the news and politics grabs you then this is the
subject for you. Students will be well-equipped for
opportunities like helping or taking part in the political
process with mock elections and youth parliament where
students can further their discursive and public speaking
skills. Students will get the chance to take part in
a "Question Time" debate, last year it was
aired on Radio Stoke.

The AS/A2 in Health and Social Care provides students with a broad knowledge of health and care services and allows them to focus on four specialist areas:

Malbank offers two periods of study - Tudor and Modern
World. Students develop skills of analysis and argument
in a lively course that covers political, social, economic,
religious and cultural change in Europe and Britain.
As a sixth form student of Advanced Level History you
will be encouraged to give tutorials, take part in debates
and undertake independent research. Also to complete
your own Personal Study on a topic of your choice.

| Performing Arts
Malbank’s Performing Arts course is well-known for students getting experiences in a wide variety of Industry opportunities from local radio and television to international institutions in London. The annual London Experience sees students meet professionals, train on West End stages and the world famous Pineapple dance studios. The course delivers skills in acting for stage and television, special effects makeup and media, backstage including technical lighting and set design as well as other performance skills such as stage combat, mask, musical theatre, recording studio work and production management. The course is coursework based though video and written work with students taking a practical performance exam and no written papers. Students on this course have gone on to work in television, dance and theatre as well as journalism, public services and design/create roles.

- Statistics
A mathematical qualification is an excellent basis
for many university courses and careers. If you have
understood and enjoyed Mathematics (in particular, algebra)
at GCSE and are thinking about studying Maths, Psychology,
Sports Studies, Biology, Geography and Business Studies
(to mention a few) then "Mathematics and Statistics" is the course for you. You will gain some insight into

Studies
Enables students to gain practical experience of a
variety of media, texts, film, television, publishing,
advertising and marketing. They later specialise in
the horror film genre and the representation of youth
and gender in the media.

Languages
Students learn to communicate effectively in all skills
about a range of topics including: Day to Day Matters;
Society; The Working World. The Environment and Citizenship;
The International Context. They will have the chance to do work experience abroad,
go to University sixth form days. Also there are opportunities
to speak with native speakers whenever feasible.

| Spanish
Spanish was introduced as a 6th Form option in 2005 and currently offers both AS and A2 level courses. The aim of the courses is to increase student's knowledge of the culture and society of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries in addition to improving their linguist awareness and understanding of the Spanish language
We have recently established links with a school near Alicante and the inaugural exchange is taking place in October 2006 .

A level music is a six module course taught over two
years with students completing three modules for AS
and three for A2. Students are expected to demonstrate
skills in Composition, Performance as well as Analysis
and Criticism. The syllabus covers a wide range of musical
styles from Baroque to the Beatles and throughout the
course students are given access to our excellent facilities
as well as wide and varied extra curricular performing

Law is relevant to everyone of us and this course will
equip you with knowledge of the legal system that can
be used in every day life. The content of the course
covers the sources of law, how the justice and legal
system work and the different roles in the legal profession.

programme and will involve video conferencing learning
so it will suit the independent learner with a passion
for law.

Studies
General Studies is a perfect complement to your main
subject choices. Two lessons a week will cover a variety
of topics as you roll through a programme of different
tutors and subjects. As well as debating perennial hot
topics such as euthanasia, and global warming you will
brush up your skills in maths and English and a foreign
language. The examination consists of some multiple
choice questions and some essay style answers.
