Breaking ground Ceremony

By Bobbi Blackman

I have been part of the Olympic Committee for just over a term now and it’s been great fun with people like Mimi, India and Georgie to make me feel welcome. When I first started at Malbank, I didn’t know that filling in an application form would lead me to such a fun team.  Watching the Pochin team begin work on our massive new build, Our Olympic dream was the most exciting time for MOCOG.

On Monday 31st January, my fellow Committee members and I were very excited. Vicky, Royah, Aimee and Izzy and I were racking our brains, creating a poem of inspiration. Will and Sophie were typing away energetically writing their speeches. For our Olympic Breaking Ground Ceremony we decided to have thirty Olympic inspired balloons, each with a message from our year seven forms and the committee. We released these into the air as the builders started work.

Then our call to meet the guests!

After the meet and greet time with the guests, MOCOG members in our hard hats and high-vis’ jackets, walked down to the building site, with the year sevens waiting like the paparazzi. Mrs Walker made her speech as the diggers drove in. A very emotional moment for the school and especially for MOCOG! The Mayor and Mrs Walker took their spade to the ground with the sound of applause filling the excited air. The photo shoot took place while members of MOCOG and teachers got the chance to sit in a digger!

We had a fabulous day and are looking forward to our Olympic dream taking off.

Week One – Brick Break

Have you heard?  This week the building began! Our builders sprang into action by blocking the exit from the canteen off and making the area safe and secureas well as beginning to remove some of the existing constructions. Even though therehas been a small disruption with regards to the canteen, when the Boulevard is finallycompleted we shall reap the rewards. We are all getting excited by the buzz of the drills as it becomes a constant reminder of the legacythat will be left for future students. Also the pictures of the final construction and the walk through video have been shown in all assemblies bringing home the reality that the Olympic boulevard is real and happening NOW! We look forward to updating you weekly on the progress of the Olympic boulevard.

Olympic Legend Pays a Visit

Olympic gold medallist and five-time world champion Geoff Thompson with Malbank School students and those from other schools.Five-time world karate champion Geoff Thompson made a guest appearance at Malbank School. It was during a Student Leadership Conference at Malbank as part of its involvement in the North West effort to promote the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Geoff is known as one of the greatest martial arts competition fighters of his generation and inspired Britain’s dominance of the 80’s and 90’s. He led the Great Britain team to three world team titles and was named the MVP (Most Valuable Performer) on each of those occasions. He hosted a seminar on ‘sporting excellence’, which is hoped will encourage youngsters to get training for the Games.

Students from Sandbach School, Sandbach High School and Brine Leas High School were also involved.
