Malbank Secondary School – Science Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Intent

At Malbank, our Science curriculum is designed to:

  • Inspire curiosity about the natural world.
  • Develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts and processes.
  • Equip students with the skills to ask questions, conduct investigations, and think critically.
  • Prepare students for success in their GCSEs and for further study or careers in science and STEM-related fields.

We ensure that students explore Biology, Chemistry, and Physics across Key Stages 3 and 4, with an emphasis on applying scientific knowledge to real-world contexts, problem-solving, and practical skills.

Key Stage 4:

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), pupils follow one of two Science pathways:

Combined Science (Trilogy)

Overview: Covers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics but in slightly less depth than Separate Science.

Teaching Time: 10 hours per fortnight.

GCSEs Awarded: 2 GCSEs in Science (dual award).

Exams: 6 exams (2 for each science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics).

Each exam is 1 hour 15 minutes long.

Grading: Awarded a double grade (e.g., 5-5, 6-6), based on overall performance.

Exam board: AQA

Separate Science (Triple Science)

Overview: More in-depth content in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Teaching Time: 15 hours per fortnight (more time allocated due to the larger content).

GCSEs Awarded: 3 separate GCSEs – one in Biology, one in Chemistry, and one in Physics.

Exams: 6 exams in total (2 for each subject).

Each exam is 1 hour 45 minutes long.

Grading: Each subject is awarded an individual grade (e.g., Biology – 7, Chemistry – 6, Physics – 7)

Exam board: AQA

Which Route is Right for My Child?

All pupils start Year 9 transitioning from key stage 3 onto the Combined Science pathway.

Those showing strong aptitude, consistent performance, and enthusiasm may be invited to move to the Separate Science pathway.

Separate Science is ideal for pupils considering A-level sciences or science-based careers such as medicine, engineering, or veterinary science.

Practical Work and Assessment

Both pathways include:

Required practical’s that are examined in the written papers.

A strong focus on working scientifically and applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
